Nominations for the Black Healthcare Awards 2025 are now open. We are pleased to have received hundreds of nominations so thank you to everyone that has nominated

Judging will be carried out by our expert panel and the shortlist will be announced in 2025.

Description and criteria 

The awards focus on Black people who are descendants of the Caribbean or African and diaspora. The Healthcare Awards recognise individuals who have established themselves as outstanding within their work. These individuals can be nominated by colleagues who recognise their work, or they can be self-nominating individuals.

Areas of Professional work  

We want our nominations to come from across the different sectors in which they practice or study. These will include Hospital, Primary Care, Community (including prison, army etc) services from across the Private, Public and Voluntary sector 

The roles will include those who work across all levels of their profession and include medical, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy and allied professionals.   

What we are looking for from each of our nominees

  • For each of the awards we are looking for individuals who display evidence of striving to improve the care to those who use their services. 
  • Those who work well with others to improve the care given to users of services. 

Nominees must be registered professionals or students registered on programmes related to the healthcare professions 

Award Categories

For Indvidual's in Private, Public and Voluntary sector

Junior Doctor in training.

We are looking for outstanding doctors in a training grade who can showcase quality care to impact users accessing their services. These junior doctors work well across teams and demonstrate commitment to clinical excellence and advocacy to deliver the best care to users. These doctors are also known as resident doctors

Doctor of the Year

This award is to recognise a doctor who is has made a difference in their department or practice area. The individual is consistently delivering high quality clinical care that embodies innovation, advocacy and learning opportunities for the wider team to improve overall care for patients.

Clinical Excellence award for consultants

This award recognises a consultant who can provide clear evidence of clinical excellence, which goes over and above their role description to deliver continuous improvement based upon high-quality research, policy change or clinical care. 

Dentist of the year

This award recognises outstanding standards and innovative practices across patient care and dental services. The dentist demonstrates the ability to provide quality care and inclusive treatments and education for all patients.  

Allied Health Professionals

This award recognises the allied health professional that have gone the extra mile to demonstrate the impact they have made in their role through care delivery, service improvement and or innovation or research to enhance the care given to users of their services.

Pharmacist

This award seeks to recognise individual pharmacists working in either community or hospital services who have made an outstanding contribution to delivering optimal care, innovation or those that have made an impact in care from their research. 

Sickle Cell Care Nurse

Dame elizabeth Nneka Anionwu Award

The sickle cell nurse of the year award provides evidence of innovation, leadership, commitment, drive and energy to enhance care to individuals living with sickle cell disease and their families. 

 

Nurse

This award is looking for the nurse of the year who demonstrates leadership, role modelling and inspirational practice in times of challenge whilst improving the quality of care for users of their services. This nurse nominee can work across any grade of mental health, adult, children’s and disability nursing. 

Advanced Nurse and Specialist Nurse Practitioner

This award recognises advanced or specialist nurses who have been instrumental in delivering positive change in their field of practice for the benefit of their patients and or colleagues. This individual uses their initiative is innovative and advocates for exceptional and comprehensive care for patients and or colleagues. 

Midwife of The Year

Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent Award

This award recognises a lead midwife whose initiative, creative and innovative approach has created improved user care for women, birthing people and their families from diverse backgrounds. 

Primary Care Practice Professional

We are looking for a Healthcare professional (GP, Practice Nurse, Community Nurse, District Nurse, Health Visitor or a member of the Nursing team) who is making an outstanding contribution to improve the primary care experiences for users across their community. This individual is driven and motivated to lead innovation and creativity to enhance the lives of others. 

Healthcare Support Professionals (Assistant Practitioner, Nurse Associate Maternity or Healthcare Assistant)

We are looking for an inspirational, innovative and creative healthcare worker who demonstrates commitment to providing high standards in their delivery of care to improve the user experience. This individual demonstrates the ability to think and seek support beyond the scope of their role to innovate and create improved opportunities for patients.

Digital Health Innovator of the Year

This award recognises an individual who has enabled their team or organisation to better serve patients and public utilising digital technology. There is evidence of improved healthcare engagement and outcomes through a transformational technology project/programme they have led on such as IT systems, mobile phone applications, virtual consultation, etc.

Cardiologist of the Year

 This award recognises a medical consultant or specialist who can provide clear evidence of clinical excellence, which goes over and above their role description to deliver continuous improvement based upon high-quality research, policy change or clinical care.

Black Student of the year – Higher Education Sector

Open to all UK students across healthcare related programmes. We are looking for evidence of enthusiasm, a keen desire to learn beyond the textbook to reach their potential

Oncology Clinician or Specialist of the Year

This award recognises a oncology healthcare professional who can provide clear evidence of clinical excellence, which goes over and above their role description to deliver continuous improvement based upon high-quality research, policy change or clinical care.is awa

The Lifetime Achievement Award

This award will honour those who have given their life’s career to healthcare to enable Improved services and outcomes for those they provide care for.

Public Health Consultant of the Year – Professor Kevin Fenton Award

Women's Health Practitioner of the year

This award recognises Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (or specialist in this area of practice) who can demonstrate excellence and passion in their contributions to practice, research or policy. The work they do can go over and above their role description within or outside of the clinical setting to deliver improvements.

Livingbridge Leadership Award

This award invites nominations for an NHS Senior Executive Leader (including Chief Executives, Chairs, Executive Directors, etc.) that has influenced or impacted a change or improvement through their decision making within their organisation or area of practice.

Health Researcher of the Year

This award goes to the health professional researcher that demonstrates ongoing leadership and commitment to identify and gain the evidence base that will improve the outcomes for people regardless of race or background.

Health/Clinical Leader of the Year – Wol Kolade Award

This prestigious award recognises an exceptional leader in health or clinical services who demonstrates visionary leadership, innovation, and a commitment to driving excellence in patient care and service delivery.

Fenton Public Health Award – Professor Kevin Fenton Award

This award acknowledges outstanding public health professionals who demonstrate innovation, leadership, and dedication to addressing health inequalities and improving population health outcomes.

Oncologist of the Year

This award celebrates an oncologist who has made a significant impact in advancing cancer care through exceptional clinical practice, innovation, or research, improving outcomes for patients and their families.

Executive of the Year – Livingbridge

This award recognises a senior executive who exemplifies strategic leadership, innovation, and a commitment to delivering exceptional organisational outcomes that positively impact communities and patients.

Social Care Professional of the Year

This award celebrates a social care professional who demonstrates outstanding dedication, compassion, and innovation in providing life-changing care and support to individuals and families in need.

Sexual Health Practitioner of the Year

This award recognises a sexual health practitioner who exemplifies excellence in providing education, care, and support to improve sexual health and wellbeing, while championing inclusivity and access for diverse communities.

Emergency Practitioner Role Model

This award honours an emergency practitioner who serves as an inspiring role model, showcasing leadership, resilience, and exceptional care delivery in challenging and high-pressure situations.
